VBAC- Vaginal Birth After C-Section
Conventional wisdom used to dictate, “once a C-section, always a C-section. But that is no longer true. Health care providers are determining that some low risk women are eligible for VBAC. This means that after they have had a C-section delivery, their next birth can be vaginal. However health care providers should be on the lookout for any signs in a VBAC if something does go wrong – especially a uterine rupture. Sometimes during a VBAC, the uterus may begin to separate where scar tissue exists resulting from the previous C-section. When this separation occurs it can often be felt by women who will describe a tearing or burning or stabbing sensation. But unfortunately women in labor and delivery will complain of this type of pain and will be mistakenly told that these are normal sensations during labor and delivery.” This can lead to very serious consequences.
In the majority of cases, when these symptoms are heeded, and the mothers are rushed to the O.R., their babies can be delivered before a total uterine rupture occurs and before the baby floats from the uterus into the abdomen resulting in a lack of oxygen or lack of blood flow to the baby’s brain.
