Cerebral Palsy - Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)
Hypoxcic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Hypoxcic Ischemic Encephalopathy describes a condition which leads to permanent neurological disorders in babies. The term derives from three medical words: hypoxia which means decreased oxygen; ischemia which refers to a decrease in the flow of blood to the baby's brain; and encephalopathy – which literally means disease of the head. H. I. E. is thus a disease which results from decreased blood flow and decreased oxygen and to the baby's brain. There are several causes of H.I.E. One way you it occurs – is when there is a problem with the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord connects the baby to the mother through the placenta. By the same token, H.I.E. can also be caused when there is a problem with the since the placenta is the organ that supplies the blood flow, nutrients and the oxygen in uterio.
