Cerebral Palsy - Placental Pathology

Cerebral Palsy Placental Pathology

Placental Pathology
Placental pathology is one of the tools used to determine when an injury occurs during labor and delivery.  The placenta plays a central role, acting almost like a buffer between the baby and its mother because it connects the baby to its mother via the umbilical cord through the mom’s uterus.  By examining the placenta we can many things that happen during the pregnancy.  It can also give us a perspective of what actually transpired during the critical time of labor and delivery.  The placenta can be examined under a microscope to look for signs of diabetes, infection or signs of passage of the baby’s stool in uterus (meconium).  Thus, to really get a precise idea of what type of environment the baby was experiencing in utero, one can get a very good idea by examining the placenta under a microscope.

Examination of the placenta can also indicate a premature separation of the placenta from the uterine wall known as an abruption, or blood clots.  This can also be helpful in determining how a baby was injured during labor and/or delivery.  Of crucial importance is a gross examination of the placenta which will show signs clots. A gross examination can also show that the placenta was broken in certain parts, or that it had distinct lobes.  Or it can be covered by stool passage of the baby.

Thus we see that in many circumstances, either under the microscope of by gross examination, the placenta can contribute to our knowledge and help us determine if and when an injury was caused to the baby during labor and delivery.
